Artists Spare Room at the Old Fire Station
04/04/2019
Eden Arts | Artists Spare Room I Artist Residencies
Available: Sept 2019 - March 2020
Duration: 1 - 3 weeks (weekends optional)
Eden Arts are offering short artist residencies at our base, an old fire station in Penrith, Cumbria. We are keen to develop an exchange between the company and artists who wish to test, explore, develop or research their ideas/practice in a creative space amongst creative people. We take a very wide view of what art and art practice is….. visual, writer, digital, performer, juggler, you might even just be thinking, you may be an environmentalist, you may just wish to hang out with us…. we are open to all suggestions and will consider them by application.
Penrith is ideally placed to explore the Lake District, the Eden Valley, the border city of Carlisle, the ‘energy coast’ of West Cumbria, themes of agriculture, land use, rurality, food production, the north, borders, boundaries, climate change, socially engaged practice, diversity, digital creative content, health and wellbeing, place and the impact of culture and art on it....
These are just examples of things we are interested in however, people are free to work on anything and use the spaces in any way they wish. There are no expectations that any particular work will be produced. The residency is there to further artists in their ongoing practice.
Eden Arts will freely give the space(s) and use of our kit: lighting kit, PA, projectors, staging; advice and support and engagement from all of our team; and free run of the building (except the bits that are in use for other purposes!).
We would ask a couple of things... that the artist contribute at least one blog post during their stay to the Eden Arts website: https://www.edenarts.co.uk/blo... and join us (and cook) at our communal vegan lunch made by one of our artists/team every Tuesday. The more that you join in with us the better. (smiley face emoticon)!!
This is an interest of ours, it doesn't have to be yours:
/ˈanθrəpəˌsiːn/
adjective
We recognise our responsibility in addressing climate change and while we were considering that we came to the realisation that the broader theme is the 'anthropocene' and this should run through all that we do; commissioning, operations, programming, conferences and governance.
The Space: A small ground floor studio approx 19m sq is available alongside the old engine bay (which can be used for large scale making, theatre rehearsal, experimental work or other performance practice). In addition, other rooms including the fire station’s mess, small meeting room, and reprographics room can be used. Wifi will be available to artists.
Easy to get to
We are just three hours by train from London Euston, less than 2hrs from Manchester and Glasgow, just off the M6 and A66
Penrith
Although Penrith is well served with transport links it is a small and rural town on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park with a small number of bars, restaurants and other local amenities. The local public transport can be limited so please bear this in mind when planning your time at Eden Arts.
Access
Eden Arts welcomes diversity and seeks to work with a range of artists and makers. Unfortunately the space is not currently accessible to wheelchair users. The rooms are downstairs. Eden Arts will seek to support artists with disabilities where possible.
Fee
This is an unpaid residency (we are not currently funded to do this but working on it). The space and support are offered free to the artist and a per diem of £20 per day and travel expenses for one return journey will be paid. Accommodation can be provided free of charge if required.
Eden Arts will also support artists wishing to submit funding applications in relation to this residency opportunity.
